WHITE ROSE AIKIKAI - KYOTO DOJOS
白薔薇合気会京都道場
白薔薇合気会京都道場
Located in the heart of Kyoto, close to the Imperial Palace, the dojo brings together both the local and international communities in the spirit of Aikido. The dojo practice maintains a traditional approach to the art of Aikido while simultaneously emphasizing a practical and realistic approach to this form of Budo. In addition to unarmed techniques, we also practice weapons forms including the sword, short staff and knife disarming. This kind of training supplements and enriches Aikido practice and illustrates the origins of Aikido techniques.
WHAT IS AIKIDO?
Aikido was founded and created by Ueshiba Morihei (below) who passed away in 1969. The key principle of his Aikido is non-resistance, through harmony. Thus, Aikido is most often translated as 'The Way of Harmony'.
The aim is to find a way to neutralise an aggressive attack whilst protecting the attacker. This is achieved through a variety of throws, pins, locks and strikes. You can see from the picture opposite Ueshiba Sensei meditating with a sword in front. The sword is an important aspect of Aikido and is the root of all basic Aikido techniques. Hence, the importance of its inclusion in the regular Aikido practice. For more information on Aikido click here.
INSTRUCTORS
John Pryce is the Dojo-Cho, chief instructor, of the Kyoto Dojo and currently holds the rank of 6th Dan awarded by Shihan Shane Riley, 7th Dan, of the White Rose Aikikai. With over 40 years combined experience in Martial Arts he also holds the rank of 2nd Dan in Yoshinkan Aikido and 2nd Dan in Shotokan Karate. He has lived in Japan since 2003 and has practiced extensively with many different instructors and styles of Aikido throughout Kansai and Aichi.
With a lifetime commitment to training in Budo, he takes a practical approach to Aikido with the view it is first and foremost a Martial Art and not a dance form. He teaches both the classical and practical forms of Aikido alongside each other. The Kyoto Dojos were founded in 2013 and when he is not teaching Aikido he lectures Chemical Engineering at Kyoto University and English at Kansai Gaidai University.
