September 2019
The crossfit Dojo was officially closed on the 31st of August. Auspiciously, the last class was taught by Harumi Sensei who was one of the first students in the dojo when it was opened. It demonstrates clearly the emphasis on perseverance, hard training and consistency. To start as a beginner and progress to instructor level was an incredible journey for her and to be able to clearly see milestones on the way was a real bonus.
New Dojo
With the closing of the old dojo we have moved to a new location, the Minami Gosho Dojo just south of the Imperial Palace in kyoto. On the first practice Harumi Sensei was presented with her Instructor certificate and 2nd dan marking a new phase for her training.

A big month for the dojo was had with three instructor tests and two Nidan tests taking place at the Kyoto Budo Center. Congratulations to Harumi Marubashi on achieving Nidan and Instructor certification; Alicia Walker on her Nidan and Instructor certification, and to Ralf Kopsch on his Assistant Instructor certification. The course was even more poignant as Alicia returns to Australia to open a White Rose Dojo on the Gold coast and was finished of by a fun night at El Latino.

As part of the 40th Anniversary of the White Rose we hosted the founder Shihan Shane Riley, and 30 students over the course of 10 days. There was lots of Aikido, some sight-seeing, and a boat load of beer and socialising. It was an amazing event to see all of the dojos in the organisation represented and the different styles of Aikido of the senior ranking Instructors. And although different, they were all recognisable as White Rose Aikikai in its central tenets. It was a really special and poignant event for Shihan Riley seeing the commitment of his UK students in travelling to Japan, their commitment to training, as well as the development of his international students representing his dojo. We look forward to the next visit. More photos to follow.

The dojo has now grown in membership over the last year, and therefore, it was naturally time to expand. So, we are proud to announce two new dojos in Termachi and The Kyoto Budo Center. And as Dojo-Cho. I would like to express my thanks to the students who have supported the dojo over the last 6 years. The Teramachi Dojo will be a weapons class only, whereas the Budo Center will be a general class

July 2018
A major milestone for the Kyoto Dojo was achieved on July 22nd with the first Shodan tests being taken. Harumi Marubashi, Ralf Kopsch and Alicia Walker all passed with flying colours in what was to be a very challenging test. Temperatures in the dojo exceeded 40 degrees with an unusual heat wave hitting Japan. Also testing, and successful that day wereFred Hendricks III (5th Kyu), Michael Chodrow (6th Kyu), Miya Banks (6th Kyu) and Billy Browne (6th Kyu).

Another milestone for the association saw the acquisition of its first official Hombu Dojo in Dewsbury. A lot hardwork and dedication was put into it by the senior instructors and students to lay the tatami and makeover the space fit for purpose. Sensei Barry Chapman very kindly constructed the Kamiza and with the help of the members installed it in place. We look forward to hosting visitors and conducting seminars in the near future. |
Jan 2018
2017 has been a great year for the dojo. We celebrated our 4th year anniversary, expanded our membership and saw current members really progress their Aikido and pass their tests with flying colours. The highlight of the year was of course Shihan Riley's visit for the first time to Japan and for the Kyoto Dojo members, and visitors, to receive instruction. We were also lucky to receive high ranking Sensei from other Aikido associations, and Martial Arts, to train with us and share their knowledge and experience. The Aikido experiences for tourists and local residents as well have been a success and will hopefully continue to develop in the New Year. There are some big plans in the coming year and hopefully we will be able to share them here soon. So, we wish everyone a Happy and prosperous New Year and please find some highlights down below.

April 16th-22nd 2017
Shihan Shane Riley 7th Dan, visited the Kyoto Dojo and an amazing week of Aikido and socializing was had by all. His instruction as always was impeccable and the students on meeting Shihan Riley for the first time were left both inspired and motivated to improve their Aikido. He was impressed with the level of the students and as a result commissioned several promotions. So, congratulations to both Harumi Marubashi and Alicia Walker on their 3rd Kyu. And also, to Ralf Kopsch for his 4th Kyu. Completely unexpected was the promotion of Pryce Sensei to the Rank of 5th Dan. We look forward to hosting Shihan Riley again and are looking forward to receiving a larger contingent in the Spring of 2019 from the hombu dojo.

Sam Wilson Sensei from Shoshin Aikido Stockport in the UK visited us early April and took the time time to teach and take part in a few classes. Wilson Sensei visited us a couple of years ago and gave us a good insight into his particular style of Aikido. As expected a certain amount of socializing was also conducted. http://www.shoshinaikidostockport.co.uk/

Pryce Sensei visited the UK to train at the Hombu for White Rose Aikido and other dojos. It was great to see old friends and make some new ones. The quality or training and, in particular, the evolution of the basic techniques was exemplary. A lot has been taken back to the Kyoto dojo and already applied in practice. We are looking forward to Shihan Riley's visit in April to consolidate some of the teaching experienced.

The Aikido open day was a great success with 16 people participating from nations all over the world such as Switzerland, Albania, Thailand, UK, Italy and the middle-east. For some it was a great experience and for others it was the start of their Aikido journey as they decided to join the regular classes. It was such a success that we will holding this event every 3 months. Not only does it attract new members but spreads Aikido into the community and beyond.
